Job Description

The Institute of Cancer Research(University of London)

Higher SCIENTIFIC OFFICER / Senior Scientific officer

  Cell communication team

Section of Cell & Molecular Biology

Chelsea, London

The Institute of Cancer Research (a College of the University of London) is a world-class cancer research organisation.  In the 2008 Higher Education Funding Councils' Research Assessment Exercise, The ICR received the highest percentage of research assessed as four stars, world leading, in the areas of biological sciences and cancer studies.  We came top of the Times Higher Education overall table of HEIs  that submitted to more than one UoA - ranking it as the UK's leading academic research centre, with 37% of activity ranked 4* (world leading) and 42% ranked 3* (internationally excellent).   We seek a Higher Scientific Officer (HSO) or Senior Scientific Officer (SSO) to play a key role in facilitating the research of the Cell Communication Team (Team Leader Claus Jørgensen).  The appointee will take direct responsibility of proteomic sample preparation and analysis by discovery based proteomic workflows as well as targeted proteomic studies, working closely with Dr. Jørgensen to develop and implement automated proteomic workflows for phospho-peptide and protein-protein interaction studies.  In addition, the post-holder will be responsible for day-to-day operations such as sample tracking, maintenance of mass spectrometers (such as Orbitrap Velos and TSQ Vantage) and nLC systems (Eksigent 1D and 2D Ultra systems) as well as data analysis.   The position is offered on a fixed-term contract of 36 months, with a starting salary in the range £28,966 to £36,060 p.a. inclusive based upon relevant post-graduate experience.  Candidates with extensive experience in quantitative phospho-proteomics and/or targeted proteomics analysis by SRM will be considered for appointment at the Senior Scientific Officer level with a starting salary of £37,241 p.a. inclusive.

Qualifications The successful applicant will hold a BSc (or ideally a PhD) in a biological science and must have extensive experience in biological mass spectrometry (nLC-ESI-MS), proteomic sample preparation, peptide fractionation, nano-liquid chromatography (nLC-MS), and data analysis. Experience with relative and absolute quantification, phospho-proteomics and automated workflow is desirable.
How to Apply Informal enquiries can be made to Claus Jørgensen (claus.jorgensen@icr.ac.uk). Formal applications must be submitted in line with the instructions below.
