| Job Description |
The Institute of Cancer Research (a College of the University of London) is a world-class cancer research organisation. In the 2008 Higher Education Funding Councils' Research Assessment Exercise, The ICR received the highest percentage of research assessed as four stars, world leading, in the areas of biological sciences and cancer studies. We came top of the Times Higher Education overall table of HEIs that submitted to more than one UoA - ranking it as the UK's leading academic research centre, with 37% of activity ranked 4* (world leading) and 42% ranked 3* (internationally excellent). We are ranked fourth internationally (and first outside the USA) for publishing scientific papers with the biggest impact on basic and clinical cancer research between 1994-2003 according to bibliometric analysis undertaken by Evidence Ltd. The Institute of Cancer Research offers a rich environment for mass-spectrometry research, with excellent infrastructure and dedicated research teams in the area (Cell Communication Team, Cellular & Molecular Logic Team, Protein Networks Team). We seek an experienced and motivated Mass Spectrometrist to join the Proteomics Core Facility – part of the new mass spectrometry initiative in Chelsea. The successful candidate will operate under the direction of the Core Facility Manager and will be responsible for the preparation and analysis of samples for diverse proteomics projects. The postholder will engage interactively with The Institute’s researchers to design proteomic workflows, discuss results, and recommend further experiments as necessary. He/she will contribute to the day-to-day running of the Core Facility including maintenance of the Core Facility instrumentation and environment, as well as the informatics platforms and Facility website. The postholder will be encouraged to evaluate new proteomic reagents, products, methods and workflows as they arise, and will assist with the development and implementation of novel proteomics methods and tools to ensure the continued technical excellence of the Core Facility. |

| Qualifications |
Applicants should hold a first degree (or equivalent) in the physical or life sciences and have experience with the operation of mass spectrometers (for example MALDI-TOF, ESI-qTOF, ESI-QQQ and/or Linear ion traps) HPLC systems, and sample preparation in a proteomics environment. Proficiency in bioinformatics approaches such as protein database interrogation and spectral interpretation is required, and experience with peptide/protein quantitation would be advantageous. |
